Berta´s Kinderland in Fiss throws its doors open to the world…
As in previous years, the Austrian ski region of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis has this year been once again inundated with international guests taking up Sunkid’s invitation to inspect the area’s impressive facilities.
For years now the ski region of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis in the Tyrol has focussed in particular on the needs of families and children, an initiative which has seen the launch of many innovative and highly professional projects such as the ‘Berta’s Kinderland’ ski area for children. And as in previous years Berta the Cow has been hard at work this year improving her ski area even more.
Berta the Cow and her guests now benefit from a completely covered 75m Sunkid Wonder Carpet conveyor which transports guests both up and down the mountain in complete safety and comfort, protected from the wind and cold. This allows the ski area’s youngest guests to travel directly from the 6-man gondola down to the practice slopes upon their arrival in the morning as well as after their lunch break. During the rest of the day, the conveyor works in the conventional manner, bringing guests back up the mountain. This conveyor has established itself as the central element of the ‘Berta’s Kinderland’ area and has proven an enormous logistical help for the ski school.
The ‘Berta’s Kinderland’ area can, however, become extremely busy with up to 500 children and their parents milling around at peak times. Such a large number of people in one place during breaks and at the end of ski lessons naturally pose an enormous logistical problem. Laden with ski equipment, buggies, toboggans etc., both children and parents want to get to the gondola as quickly as possible to travel back down to the main station. The management of the lift facilities in Fiss took into account this logistical challenge and decided on the installation of a 117m Sunkid conveyor to transfer guests back to the gondola. The terrain that this conveyor has to traverse has, however, an extremely concave profile with gradients ranging between 15% and a maximum of 26%. Taking this additional challenge into account, it was decided to install a chain conveyor. Indeed the chain conveyor installed uses the newly-developed “Power” chain conveyor technology which boasts a breaking load 42% superior to that of conventional chain conveyors as well as integrated moulded rubber grips to ensure optimal traction on the conveyor.
This year Berta the Cow has an extra reason to be happy: she has even MORE room to roam! Thanks to the installation of a new 51m Wonder Carpet conveyor, the ‘Kinderland’ area has grown considerably in size and can now deal comfortably with the increasing numbers of visitors.
However, all that skiing doesn’t half work up an appetite! No problem! The management of the area have thought of everything and this year built a brand-new children’s restaurant overlooking the ‘Kinderland’ practice area, offering parents a great opportunity to keep an eye on their children whilst catching a few rays at the same time!
