Wunderwiese - Schneeberg (AUT):

Year-round skiing at only 600m above sea level

With the opening of the “Wunderwiese” at the Schneeberg, a small piece of Austrian tourist history has been written to the southeast of Vienna. Puchberg am Schneeberg is advertising itself here with a clamor that will guarantee plenty of attention both in Austria and further afield. What’s been opened here is one of the largest synthetic ski slopes in Europe, over an area of 1.23 acres (5000 m2).

With the decline in snow days each winter, imaginative ideas, innovative products and alternative concepts for many lower-altitude winter sports resorts are now more sought after than ever.
“It’s definitely a fantastic alternative, and it’s great that we have this opportunity in Lower Austria,” said multiple World Cup and Olympic champion Michaela Dorfmeister, in ebullient mood after testing the slope with some professional turns.

The specially designed plastic mats promise almost exactly the same characteristics as those you get with snow. These scientifically confirmed properties make it possible to enjoy winter sports not just in the absence of winter snow but even throughout the year.

Sunkid developed and realized the entire project in close cooperation with the operator, NÖVOG, and its long-standing partner Neveplast. Also installed in addition to the two synthetic slopes were two conveyor belts (outdoor conveyors) and a tubing run from Sunkid, all of which have combined to make a sensational splash at the Schneeberg.

“With this project we’ve created another venue where all the focus is on sport and family fun. We’ve invested a million euros and a lot of passion in the development and construction of this project. We’ve deliberately decided to reposition the Puchberg ski resort because winter at lower altitudes is producing less and less snow, and the new plastic mat slopes have given us a unique selling proposition. Children in particular can safely learn to ski, even outside the winter. Our motto is this: don’t shut up shop but keep on developing.” Such is the declaration in unison of Lower Austrian state councilor Karl Wilfing and NÖVOG CEO Gerhard Stindl.
