A Modern Upgrade for the Grünberg Speedster

Popular summer toboggan run in Gmunden (Austria) featuring the latest Sunkid toboggan technology

Place: Gmunden /Year: 2026 / Product: Mountain Coaster

With the replacement of all vehicles with Generation 2.0 models, the “Grünberg-Flitzer” in Gmunden on Lake Traunsee (Austria) offers greater comfort, safety, and operational efficiency. This modernization ensures that the summer toboggan run will continue to be one of the most popular family attractions on the Grünberg.

Since the summer of 2023, the Grünberg has been ranked among the “Best Austrian Summer Mountain Railways” in the “Family Mountain” category. Together with attractions such as the treetop trail, hiking trails, and a wide variety of play areas, the 1,396-meter-long Grünberg-Flitzer is a key component of the diverse family-friendly offerings. To prepare the attraction for the future, all vehicles were replaced in 2024 with 40 Generation 2.0 mountain coaster sleds.

The new generation of vehicles incorporates numerous technical advancements that benefit both guests and the operator. The redesigned sled offers two passengers—one adult and one child—more space and a comfortable, ergonomic seating position, thereby reinforcing the family-friendly nature of the Grünberg-Flitzer. Intelligent assistance and braking systems, as well as active distance and speed control, further enhance safety. At the same time, the digital maintenance app MOCO pro simplifies maintenance and contributes to the ride’s high availability. As before, the sleds are transported uphill via the existing T-bar lift. The existing infrastructure continues to be used cost-effectively, without the need for a new, separate conveyor system. The covered, fully automated storage system—including a transfer track unit and three parking lanes—ensures that sleds are made available as needed with minimal staff involvement.

For Sunkid, the Grünberg-Flitzer also holds special significance: Due to its proximity to the development and manufacturing sites in Bad Goisern and Russbach am Pass Gschütt, new technologies and optimizations could be tested under real operating conditions and further developed in collaboration with Bergbahnen Dachstein Salzkammergut. Many innovations now used in mountain coasters worldwide were first tested here. Sunkid would like to express its sincere gratitude for the long-standing, trusting collaboration and the opportunity to use the Grünberg-Flitzer as a practical development platform.
