"Funbob am Haunold" (Italy) upgraded to Mountain Coaster 2.0
The “Funbob am Haunold” in Innichen is one of the most popular summer attractions in the Hochpustertal region. The track has been in operation since 2003 and is open daily from the beginning of June to mid-October – on certain days during the high season, you can even go tobogganing at night. After more than two decades of successful operation and occasional redesigns of the track layout, parts of the track were modernized again for the 2025 season. In addition, the operator replaced all vehicles with smart toboggans from the new Mountain Coaster Generation 2.0.
On the 1,739-meter-long track – in front of the impressive panorama of the world-famous 3 Zinnen (“Three Peaks”) – passengers descend a height difference of 314 meters. The monorail winds its way spectacularly, with gradients of up to 40 percent in some sections, from the starting point at an altitude of 1,500 meters down into the valley. What used to be a purely mechanical ride is now a high-tech experience with digital support and smart safety architecture.
The new Generation 2.0 vehicles offer ergonomically improved seats, greater comfort, and enhanced safety thanks to an intelligent assistance and braking system, two seat belts, and active distance control. This ensures automatic braking and speed reduction if the distance to the cart in front becomes too small. This does not change the unique sporty riding experience of the Sunkid toboggan run, as each guest controls their own speed using the brake lever.
From an operator's perspective, the upgrade brings decisive advantages. The digital maintenance platform “MOCO pro” with an individual system overview shows the live status of the toboggan run, all toboggans and their maintenance status, as well as digital maintenance logs and upcoming errors. This greatly simplifies operational organization and reduces maintenance costs and downtime.
The coasters are transported to the start next to the mountain station in a similar way to the passengers on the 4-seater chairlift from San Candido. Special hangers between the lift's chair cabins pick up the sleds fully automatically at the valley station. They are transported there through a tunnel and a gallery – once at the top, unloading and feeding into the buffer section before the start is again fully automatic.
